The academic and research community has a critical role to play in developing the solutions that will help us transform our society and transition to a just and sustainable green economy. To ensure their voices were heard as Stockholm+50 reflected back on the last 50 years of global environmental governance and envisioned the next 50, the academic and research stakeholder engagement track focused on facilitating discussions, consultations, and events among the scientific community. This engagement resulted in the below key contributions:

Scientific report: Stockholm+50: Unlocking a better future Authored by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), this independent report provided the scientific basis for the Stockholm+50 meeting, having synthesized relevant information drawn from both the scientific literature and policy documents. 2. Youth report: Charting a youth vision for a just and sustainable future Authored by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), this independent report considered the latest science, identified policy gaps, and studied systemic challenges. It also makes future policy suggestions for accelerating implementation and overcoming roadblocks; and integrates findings from a global online survey conducted with more than 900 young people from 89 countries. This report is a companion to the independent scientific report: Stockholm+50: Unlocking a better future, and was drafted in close consultation with the Stockholm+50 Youth Task Force. 3. Event: Sustainable planet, sustainable health – how science-based solutions can drive transformative change On 1 June 2022, the Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) held a one-day hybrid event which focused on how academia, through research and higher education, can contribute to solutions to our triple planetary crisis— biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollution and waste. 4. Webinar series: The Road to Stockholm+50 A four-part webinar series organized by the Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) convened sustainability champions from governments, IGOs, NGOs, civil society, and the private sector to exchange insights on relevant themes. 5. Expert Writing Group: A letter to fellow citizens of Earth On the occasion of Stockholm+50, natural scientists, engineers, social scientists and scholars from many disciplines and countries issued a letter to fellow citizens of the earth that calls for multiple actions towards a safer and better future. |
