Achieving a healthy planet for all through a gender just recovery

SIDE EVENT
Friday 3 June
17:15-18:30 CEST
Stockholmsmässan, Room 5

Organizers: UNEP, Global Green Growth Institute, UN Women, and the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership Gender Expert Group

About: Gender must be at the forefront of the regenerative work being done to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic while addressing climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. Gender inequalities, such as weak land rights or reduced access to finance, energy, water and sanitation facilities, make women disproportionally vulnerable to climate change as well as environmental and social hazards. Therefore, mainstreaming gender into the global environmental agenda, particularly in the context of achieving a sustainable and inclusive recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, is essential in the strive for a healthier planet for all. However, dedicated financing for women’s empowerment remains particularly low in the context of the environmental agenda.

With the concept of “Just Transitions” as an entry point, this event aims to explore why gender equality needs to be a central component of global environmental action and to the ambitions of a better post-COVID world. It will spotlight the opportunities and limitations of our current just transition financing tools and models in fulfilling our commitment to combating the three planetary crises and ensuring that the funding gap for disadvantaged groups is closed and that they are socially and economically empowered to fruitfully participate and benefit from the post COVID recovery strategies.

Event outcomes (Key transformative actions):

  • Donors, private sector and government must strengthen financing for gender focused action to empower women and youth and provide them with opportunities to fully and meaning fully participate in the green transition as a matter of priority.
  • Facilitate a rapid culture of systemic reform and transformation at the national level by supporting institutional changes through improved policy legal frameworks and budgeting towards a gender just societal transition and at the community level by shifting gender norms, supporting community empowerment and bringing forward the voices of the disadvantaged in decision making.
  • Actions needed to achieve the 2030 Agenda and a gender just transition will not be reached by working in silos and resources have to be pooled through strategic and effective partnerships and collaborations in order to achieve gender just goals now.
