Environmental Crises as Humanitarian Crises

SIDE EVENT
Friday 3 June
13:00-14:15 CEST
Stockholmsmässan, Room 1

Organizers: International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, International Committee of the Red Cross, Kenya Red Cross, Swedish Red Cross, United Nations Environment Programme, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Joint Environment Unit, World Wide Fund for Nature - WWF

About: The event will discuss how planetary crises (climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution) are increasingly felt as humanitarian crises, especially by the vulnerable and marginalized communities and groups, and in fragile contexts. It will showcase how the humanitarian sector is transforming the way it works and taking action on the ground through working with nature, reducing risks, and adapting to climate change to reduce humanitarian impacts on the most vulnerable. It will present findings from the recently launched IFRC-WWF Flagship report Working with Nature to Protect People: How Nature-based Solutions Reduce Climate Change and Weather-Related Disasters. It will also showcase solutions for reducing the environmental impact of humanitarian operations themselves, whilst discussing commitments taken by the sector through the recent Climate and Environment Charter for Humanitarian Organizations.
